What is an electronic signature?

The electronic signature is a tool to safeguard the integrity of an electronic document and to identify its author, by analogy with the handwritten signature of a paper document.

In accordance with Articles 1322-1 and 1322-2 of the Civil Code, an electronic signature has the same value as a handwritten signature for any deed under private seal. Article 6 of the Law of 14 August 2000 on electronic commerce states that an electronic signature is a set of data, linked inextricably to the deed, which safeguards its integrity and meets the conditions laid down in the first paragraph of this article. Thus an electronic signature is valid only if accompanied by a LuxTrust certificate or equivalent guaranteeing its integrity.

For further information, please see the LuxTrust FAQ.
